Youth EXPLORE Trades Sampler

The Youth EXPLORE Trades Sampler offered at VIU provides hands-on training and a work experience opportunity in a variety of in-demand careers. School District 68’s CTC, works in partnership with VIU to deliver this full semester exploration program. After completion of this program, a student can decide to apply to a Foundation program through our Youth Train in Trades, or an apprenticeship through our Youth Work In Trades Program. We offer two Co-Ed, an all Women’s and a Priority student cohort for Indigenous and Newcomers with permanent residence status.

  • Use of Tools and Equipment for Trades Fields
  • Introduction to Welding and Fitting
  • Worksite Safety
  • Job Site Visits
  • Guest Speakers
  • Introduction to Carpentry
  • Introduction to Electrical Theory and Safety
  • Introduction to General Mechanics (automotive, heavy duty, motorcycle and marine)
  • Culinary
  • Introduction to heavy equipment operating (include simulators and real machine time)
  • Fall Protection
  • Standard First Aid
  • Confined Space Entry
  • What’s WHMIS
  • Foodsafe
  • Construction and Forestry Machine Simulation Training
  • Career preparation (resume and cover letter)
  • Real world industry Work Experience

Classes run between 8:45 AM and 3:00 PM Monday to Thursday and Fridays 9:30 AM to 2:30 PM

Credits:

Students will receive 12 PSI (Post Secondary Institution) credits as well as their CLC course and Work Experience/Peer tutoring, all leading to toward their grade 12 graduation requirements.

Cost:
Families pay student activity fees (approximately $350 for school year 24-25) and are required to purchase some PPE (Personal Protective Equipment) such as Work Safe approved footwear. PPE is available at no cost for students in need.

Program Overview

Students are responsible for the VIU application fee, student fees, student activity fees, materials, travel, parking, and textbooks costs. If you drop out of all VIU courses you register for, you could be responsible for the $200.00 VIU registration fee.
